Smiter hate?
PvP-i'm hated at first by the enemy because they think i'm a healer, and then hated by everyone once they find i'm a smiter...
PvE-hell, no chance...i've been forced to prot/smite permanently, no pure smite.
Why can't these people just take smiters, like they would any other damage dealing class?

Most people find it hard enough to find a monk, even harder to find a good one. When they look for them they are looking towards heal or heal/prot. Unless you get in a team that is already filled it's quota for healers, then they won't want to see a monk that isn't going to help keep them alive. Sad but true.
I've always thought I would like being a smiting monk, but haven't been able to work on a build because I know how hard it will be to get into a group...even harder than being a mesmer I think.

Not necessarily. I had a monk that I played up to level 16-17. Mostly smite plus illusion. I could do a great deal of damage. I eventually deleted for a Ranger. Anyway, I can understand where Soul Shaker is coming from. PvE it was annoying having groups asking me to switch to a healer/protector when I was more interested in dealing damage...effectively.

To be honest, smiters usually work better as a hybrid than pure smiting. Most of the good smiting skills are enchantments, which means you can cast them and do something else for a while (like heal or prot); in fact, some skills like ZF encourage you to heal/prot in addition to smiting. The direct damage smite skills have long recharges and don't do that amazing of damage compared to what other classes have.
The best option for a purely offensive smiter, imho, would be Mo/Me with some shutdown skills or hex removal thrown in. Even in that situation, though, you're still playing partial support. You pretty much have to accept that monks are intended to be a group support class. If you just want to deal damage, there are better options.

I never seen any pure smiter in GW, but I already got a smite/healer (Zealot fire+heal) in my group. He was a good monk thought.
But I wonder one thing: zealot fire with heal party, does this combo work? I mean, does zealot affect everyone in the party or just you, target, etc?

Unfortunately, it's just one of those things.
I completed the game as a pure smiter, although I complimented smite damage dealing skills with Mesmer Domination damage dealing skills.
I disagree with some other posts in this thread, such as Effigy, when it comes to pure smite versus hybrid smite. I think smiters are great offensive spellcasters in PvE. It happens, but I'm rarely in a situation where all of my skills are recharging and I'm unable to cast. Played and built correctly, a smiter can offer good steady offense.
Most (not all) people see Monk and want a healer or protector. It's just the way it goes. You can't let it get to you.
So you have to be more patient in getting into groups. You really need to communicate with the group leader before accepting or requesting an invite. Make sure he/she knows you smite and do not heal. Once you're in the group, make sure everyone in the group understands that you smite and do not heal. Of course, many groups will want nothing to do with you. Keep at it, though, or you can always start your own groups or even stick with guildies who should be more understanding/accomodating.
Good luck.

I would probably smite more, if there were more smiting spells. As it is they are mostly AoE's that dispurse crowds, or enchantments which are soon stripped/shattered/drained.

That's just how GW is. There's the healing class: Monks;and the damage class: Warriors(not that I'm against smite monks). Monks is the only class which can actually heal which is important in battle. Besides, you could smite here and there while you aren't healing right?

"Yeup - heal me so I can have all the fun of attacking while you get to keep your eyes on the health pools and enjoy filling them reduntantly...pure ecstacy." Sadly most cannot play worth a darn without a healer monk backing them up.
Monks - anyone griefing you ..... I saw this the other day a monk in the group said.... "keep it up and I'll let you die next time" when someone talked crap about not getting a heal when they wanted. I about busted a gut laughing, especially since the monk was great and the moron just didn't realize that he was nowhere close to dying in the first place.

PvE, most smiters can't cut it when it comes to damaging large groups of mobs. They run out of mana fast, the monks primary weakness. The cardinal sin they make is in self casting rather than focusing on the person agroed. Thats my experience with pure smiters.
1v1 and PvP, I'd hate to fight a smiter. All the enchants they throw down, coupled with the longer durations of most smite enchants, makes them a tough class to control, even with good strips on your team. It's like trying to punch a porcupine; the harder you hit, the worse it hurts But I'd still rather see a hybrid than a pure smiter, someone who definately can take care of himself while he 1v1s that tank with a mesmer hot on him. And if he can suplement a heal party here and there, I don't see any reason not to make him a third monk in GvG/HoH.
The only real problem I see is that all the good monk skills are pure reactionary. Your ally has to be attacked/cast upon for the spell to take effect. But thats the same curse mesmers suffer and they do quite well in PvP (but, again, they have fast casting to help during the thick of it).

Lets keep the aggro out of this thread please. My take on smiting monks is that smiting monks arn't usually accepted by a party mostly because...
1. Most parties that you get into (PvE) are just made randomly (using the 2 tank, 2 heal, 3 nuke, 1 prot mindset). Those that arn't just made randomly most likely will not accept smiters because a lot of people have no real experience with smiters in PvE groups (they just dont know how effective and how much help a smiting monk can bring to a group).
2. There arn't a lot of PvP builds that include smiters in them. The random PvP "invite all" groups also belive that all monks are either prot or heal and will most likely kick you when they find out that you are smiting (since they will need room for "useful" monks).

I guess the real question is, why smite rather than something else, like a fire ele? If you're not going to go hybrid smite with support or shutdown skills, then I think you're gimping yourself. Smiting alone just doesn't do as much straight up damage as other classes/attribute lines, not to mention that all the good powers except SoJ will make enemies flee now. Of course it's an option, but is it the best option?
And in response to all this talk about "healing is boring," I think not. I'd hardly consider the most challenging and critical role to the success of your team to be "boring," but I guess that's just me. There's more to this game making a bunch of yellow numbers appear on your screen. Nuff said.

I started doing healing smite builds that are actually fun. not just staring at the party screen keeping them alive... Normally as the 3rd monk or something like that...
Lately the All monk parties are really fun. Smiters as dmg dealers, Bonders healers and prots / smiters... fun fun fun... got through the Tombs underworld with an all monk build in a matter of 45 mins. Personally I thought that was rather impressive... It sure was fun to do... Much more then just having to watch the party bars constantly...

the problem is, i tried this lately with some guildies:
we took 4 monks (team arena's) and we had 2 smiters, just the whole bar full with smite skills and 1 heal and 1 active prot.
we fought against a team that had no warrior and only 1 monk, 1 ele, 1 mesmer and 1 necro.
the major problem for me was, energy! you just didn't get enough energy to keep casting so mostly i had to wait for full energy then cast zealots fire, holy wrath, and a few attack skills, and we're attacking one monk, and he just kept surviving (well ok he died 1 time) but it just didn't work.
so monks just better can heal and let the others do the real damage.

Grab some SoJ monks with zealots fire, balthazar's spirit, and essence bond. 1 boon heal monk (though with the recent changes I dont know how well it may work) and a prot monk! Of course that seems logical to me..I dont know what others may think of it :P
